Kathleen Major
Perhaps best known as the wife of artist Theodore Major, Kathleen was an accomplished artist in her own right having studied at Wigan Art School where she met her husband.
Although Kathleen exhibited during the mid 1950s alongside her husband and the likes of L S Lowry at the Salford Art Gallery, she pursued a career in teaching allowing her husband the freedom to paint.
Later in life however Kathleen suffered a series of strokes which left her unable to speak and her artwork became a new outlook allowing her to communicate with her family and friends.
In 2012 Gallery Oldham reexamined her work in a solo exhibition entitled 'Songs Born of Silence' placing her firmly as an artist in her own right.
