48 Years Since the Death of L S Lowry

Last updated on

Today marks 48 years since the passing of the late great British artist L S Lowry on 23rd February 1976 at the Woods Hospital in Glossop.

His depictions of everyday life in the North dating from the early 1920s to the mid 1970s still capture the imagination of viewers today with collectors across the globe now enjoying his work. Retrospectives at the likes of the Tate gallery followed his death and works have been subsequently exhibited as far afield as China.

Did you know that Lowry reportedly holds the record for the most honours declined from the British State having declined a knighthood in 1968, two OBEs, a CBE in 1961 and appointments to the Order of the Companions of Honour in 1972 and 1976?
