Exhibition of Barry Hilton Original Paintings

Our enduringly popular landscape artist Barry Hilton has thrilled our collectors for almost two decades with his dramatic and atmospheric landscape paintings along with his more nostalgic street scenes and harbour paintings.

Due to his popularity, we rarely have more than two of his original paintings on show in the gallery but this month we are delighted to have a broad selection of his paintings on offer spanning seven decades dating back to the 1970s.

The earliest paintings in the exhibition include both large and small examples of Hilton’s haunting galleon and harbour paintings which demonstrate the earliest signs of his atmospheric skies which would become familiar in the following decades in his landscape paintings.  Much more subdued in their colour palette and feel, these paintings are wonderfully executed and truly showcases the artist’s skills in both perspective and detail.

Moving on from these early harbour paintings, we are also pleased to have two fine examples of his Victorian style street scenes which show the next transition in his style and technique.  Developing the skills shown in the early galleons, Hilton’s ability to accurately represent the buildings in the Victorian streets is superb and the introduction of more colour from the galleons adds yet another dimension to this series of paintings.  Many of these street scenes were produced in his small format of 16″x 12″ but both slightly larger than this canvas size, these two fine examples on show are a more unusual find.

The next stunning piece available is a further evolution of the artist’s style which was the stepping stone to what became his now internationally collected contemporary style.

This striking beachscape is a glimpse into Hilton’s iconic use of contrast in his paintings, juxtaposing dramatic reds and oranges in the skies in this painting directly against the soft sandy tones of the restful beach.  In a large 30″ x 30″ size, this is a truly rare and dramatic painting and a fascinating window into how Hilton’s style has evolved.
