Paul Kenton Artist BiographyAt the age of eight years old, Paul Kenton moved from his birth place in Derby to the West Country - where he learnt to surf on the wild beaches of North Devon as a teenager. Travelling around the world as a keen surfer rekindled his passion for painting. Now settled in Ilfracombe with his Brazilian partner, Alexandra and two young daughters, Kenton still surfs when he's not in the studio.
Paul Kenton showed interest in painting from an early age. He continued to paint and draw through school but was disappointed not to be awarded a place at Art College due to his English grades. His disillusionment drove him in another direction and he studied the rigid disciplines of industry and was awarded a Bachelor in Engineering from Stafford University. After University he worked as a draughtsman for several years while still painting in his spare time.
In 1995, supported by a grant from the Prices Youth Buiness Trust, Paul Kenton took the plunge and started to paint full time and began exhibiting. He states: "as I am a keen surfer I love the sea
The recurring themes of reflection and movement frequently appear in my new work. Equally I love capturing scenes late in the day and into the early evening due to the last drops of warming light filling every available surface. My Cityscapes reflect the many moods of manmade landscapes; I find it exhilarating to express furious movement, artificial lights and the vibrancy of a busy City centre at night as well as the subtler moods of a misty dawn at the same venue."
To reflect the movement and energy of the city scenes which Kenton portrays, he uses a screwdriver to apply paint very loosely in fluid movements across the canvas. The artist uses mixed media which consists of a secret recipe which he will not reveal.
Paul's art work has gone from strength to strength, and after taking part in the 2010 London Elephant Parade, as well as having his work exhibited in galleries internationally, he is now more recognised than ever.
